Troubleshoot Windows performance and storage

First confirm that the slowdown or low-storage condition persists. Then review processes, memory, disk activity, and free space on the system drive. Do not stop a process because of one spike or remove files in bulk before reviewing them.

QUICK ANSWER

Observe the PC for 5 to 10 minutes while the issue is happening. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager and see whether the same app keeps using CPU, memory, or disk. Then open Settings → System → Storage. If readings recover quickly, record the event instead of immediately stopping a process or deleting files.

    Record when it happens

    Separate an always-slow startup from slowdowns after opening one app, heavy games or builds, and temporary work from Windows Update, antivirus scans, or cloud sync. Continue only with a pattern you can reproduce.

    Look for sustained usage in Task Manager

    Sort the Processes page by CPU, memory, or disk. A process is more relevant when it remains near the top for several minutes while the slowdown continues. Save your work and quit through the app first; do not force-stop an unfamiliar process by name alone.

    Check memory, disk activity, and startup apps

    Near-full memory with paging, or sustained heavy disk activity, can hurt responsiveness. Use Startup apps to review software that launches at sign-in, but disable items one at a time and observe the result.

    Check free space on C:

    Updates, temporary files, the page file, and app caches all need room on the system drive. Open Settings → System → Storage and review temporary files, installed apps, and personal files before choosing what to remove.

    Reproduce after restart, then review updates and drivers

    A restart clears stale work but does not identify the cause. If the problem returns, record the steps and review recent Windows updates, drivers, antivirus software, or resident utilities one change at a time.

Review before freeing storage

  • Start with Downloads, old installers, unused apps, large videos, virtual machines, and Recycle Bin.
  • Storage Sense primarily manages the system drive; review its temporary-file, Recycle Bin, and Downloads retention rules before enabling it.
  • Do not manually delete Windows, Program Files, or unfamiliar AppData content. Uninstall software through Settings → Apps.
  • In CoreRobin, review the path and size first. Adding an item to the cleanup basket does not delete it; the app rescans and asks again before permanent deletion.

Windows is currently an early preview

The Windows package passes automated build and launch checks, but hardware coverage is still smaller than on macOS. Temperature, battery health, process ownership, and some startup information depend on hardware, drivers, and OS interfaces. CoreRobin shows unavailable when it has no trustworthy reading instead of estimating one.
